In the days leading up to the vote, polling indicated that the measure would be a close contest, with supporters narrowly outnumbering opponents by about two points. But the pro-legalization campaign prevailed on Election Day.
Prior to the election, only four states and D.C. had legalized marijuana for recreational use. Nevada voters did, however, pass a measure to legalize medical marijuana in 2000.

Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, based in Nevada, contributed over $1 million to a campaign opposing the state's recreational legalization initiative in the final weeks before the election, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
