Our First Look at the Caitlyn Jenner Reality Show

June 3rd 2015

E! has announced the title and released a one-minute promo for its new show that will follow the life of Caitlyn Jenner after her transition to a woman this year.

The show, "I Am Cait," will premiere on Sunday, July 26, at 9 p.m.

“So many people go through life and they never deal with their own issues. No matter what the issues are. Ours happen to be gender identity,” Jenner says in the promo. “How many people go through life and waste their entire life because they never deal with themselves and be who they are?”

Based on the promo, it looks like the eight episodes will explore Jenner's new life in the context of our preconceptions about gender.

"You start learning kind of the pressure that women are under all of the time about their appearance," Jenner says.

Observers will be closely watching to see whether the show gets beyond the physicality of Jenner's transition and into the everyday challenges faced by transgender Americans.

"The media doesn't show us the often mundane, day-to-day lives of many transgender people," S.E. Smith wrote at Rolling Stone on Tuesday. "Their gender is part of a multifaceted identity, and it contributes to their experiences in significant ways, but it's not the only thing that does. You wouldn't think so if you read... well, just about any media coverage of transgender people."

"Orange is the New Black" star Laverne Cox touched on this topic in a Tumblr post.

"Yes, Caitlyn looks amazing and is beautiful," Cox wrote. "[B]ut what I think is most beautiful about her is her heart and soul, the ways she has allowed the world into her vulnerabilities. The love and devotion she has for her family and that they have for her. Her courage to move past denial into her truth so publicly. These things are beyond beautiful to me."

Jenner has already been a reality TV star, having been the paternal figure on E!'s juggernaut "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," which is in its tenth season.

Our first glimpse of Caitlyn Jenner (formerly Bruce) came on Monday when Vanity Fair released the first public photos of Caitlyn. Caitlyn will grace the cover of the July issue.
