The Highly Disturbing Irony in This Charleston Cover Story

On the morning after suspected gunman Dylann Roof carried out a massive shooting at the historically Black Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, the Charleston Post & Courier published the devastating story alongside a gun shop ad on the front page of the paper.

College of Charleston philosophy professor Jonathan Neufeld drew attention to the bizarre juxtaposition by tweeting out a photo of the newspaper cover on Thursday morning:

The advertisement is for "Ladies' Night" at Summerville, South Carolina's ATP Gun Shop & Range.

"Have you ever wanted to learn to shoot for fun, sport, or self-defense, but felt intimidated by guns or the guys?" the website reads. "Then you need to sign up for one of our Ladies' Night Shoots. You will leave the experience feeling better about your newly acquired knowledge and newfound sense of self-empowerment."

The Charleston Post & Courier released an apologetic statement to journalist Jim Romenesko, claiming the sticker ad's placement was purely coincidental, "The front-page sticky note that was attached to some home delivery newspapers on the same day as this tragedy is a deeply regrettable coincidence. We apologize to those who were offended."
