It's been two years since Miley Cyrus famously twerked and put on a raunchy performance with Robin Thicke at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), and the artist will be hosting this year's ceremony on Sunday night. The 2013 VMAs marked a big shift in Cyrus' career, as she proved during the show that her "Hannah Montana" Disney days were well behind her.

Since taking on a free-spirited, fearless image several years ago, Cyrus has dedicated herself to social causes and promoting progressive ideas as an artist. The VMAs this weekend will present a great opportunity for her to continue spreading her important messages. Considering that she has already thrown her support behind these social causes, here are four topics ATTN: hopes she will bring up at the big event:

1. #FreetheNipple

A staunch supporter of the #FreetheNipple movement, Cyrus wore pasties over her breasts to a "Jimmy Kimmel Live" interview on Wednesday to make a point about societal double standards on female nipples.

"Humans aren't afraid of the human breast," she said. "It's the nipple that's the issue... I'm showing my boobs [right now in these pasties] and no one has a problem because the nipples are covered so somehow that's OK. America's actually fine with tits. It's nipples they don't like... The nipple, you can't show, everyone has, but the jug part that everyone doesn't, you're allowed to show under-boob."

As we previously noted, Cyrus was likely throwing shade at Instagram, which previously censored one of her topless photos. In December, she posted a photo of her breasts alongside the caption, "Some lame a** deff gonna (flag) dat (s***) but f********k it #practicewhatchupreach #FreeTheNipple #freedats***." As expected, Instagram deleted that image.

Unfortunately for Instagram, Cyrus is full of fight. She went on to post other subtle photos of her nipple on Instagram a few months later:

Here's to hoping that she will note the importance of the #FreetheNipple campaign at the VMAs, which drew more than 8 million viewers last year. If the audience is similar on Sunday, there's potential for millions to learn why many women are celebrating the movement.

2. Sexual fluidity

During a recent Paper magazine interview, Cyrus divulged that she has had relationships with women, as well as men—even though the media has only covered her relationships with high profile celebrities such as Liam Hemsworth and Nick Jonas.

"I've had [serious relationships with women], [b]ut people never really looked at it, and I never brought it into the spotlight," she said.

Cyrus added that she told her mom at age 14 that she was attracted to females. Her mom had trouble accepting this at first but ultimately showed support and love for her daughter's feelings.

"I remember telling her I admire women in a different way," she said. "And she asked me what that meant. And I said, I love them. I love them like I love boys. And it was so hard for her to understand. She didn't want me to be judged and she didn't want me to go to hell. But she believes in me more than she believes in any god. I just asked for her to accept me. And she has."

When Cyrus made a drastic appearance change in 2012 by cutting off all her hair, openly bisexual actress Evan Rachael Wood tweeted that she thought Cyrus was gay. Wood was criticized online for making this assumption but went on to clarify on Twitter that she meant Cyrus merely gave her gay vibes:

"I myself am bisexual and have always 'joked' about miley giving me gay vibes. Not a bad thing! Just an observation. So i 'joked' when she cut her hair that it supported my case. But, i am not so close minded or into stereotypes or labeling. It was a joke. Period. could care less what gender she was attracted to. But dont hate me for supporting her in whatever She chooses. Its all fine by me. That is all."

At the time, Cyrus responded to Wood, "[w]ell said ... lets be friends."

Now that she is so open and honest with everyone, she can share her pro-LGBT sentiment with the world and continue to elevate those who have been discriminated against for their sexuality.

3. The problem with sexism

This summer, Cyrus called out Hollywood sexism during an interview with Marie Claire. Cyrus has been dealing with double standards for many years, but in 2012, she received significant backlash for releasing a song called "We Can't Stop" due to its apparent reference to the drug molly. Cyrus told the publication that it was frustrating to be criticized for this while male rappers get away with writing similar lyrics.

"There is so much sexism, ageism, you name it," she told the magazine. "Kendrick Lamar sings about LSD and he's cool. I do it and I'm a druggie whore."

4. Trans awareness

Earlier this year, Cyrus launched a two-week Instagram campaign titled InstaPride to celebrate "transgender and gender expansive people from around the country." Cyrus, who had recently told Paper magazine that she doesn't identify with any gender, shared photos on Instagram about the project at the time:

As someone who has never been able to relate to the male of female gender, Cyrus said this campaign was important to her.

"I don't relate to being boy or girl, and I don't have to have my partner relate to boy or girl," Cyrus said during her Paper magazine interview. "I've had [serious relationships with women], [b]ut people never really looked at it, and I never brought it into the spotlight."

During her later chat with Marie Claire, Cyrus said she hangs out with Caitlyn Jenner, who famously transitioned from male to female this year and went on to star in her own E! reality series "I Am Cait" to increase visibility of trans issues. Jenner recently made news after an "I Am Cait" teaser showed her ex-wife Kris Jenner saying Caitlyn abandoned the family in the midst of the transition.

"We've talked a lot about how you can never make every single person happy," Cyrus told the publication of her interactions with Jenner. "We always laugh about people saying she transitioned to be famous. Which is crazy. Caitlyn has to tell her story, because if she doesn't, everyone else is going to tell it for her."
