Edward Snowden, the former government contractor turned National Security Agency whistleblower, just signed up for Twitter. He made headlines in 2013 after leaking classified information about NSA surveillance programs that raised questions about the government's involvement in domestic spying activities.
In his first Tweet, the encryption expert wrote simply, "Can you hear me now?"
Who exactly Snowden is referring to is unclear. It might be the public—considering the fact that he's long criticized citizens for not caring enough about what the NSA and other intelligence agencies are doing behind closed doors—or it might be the NSA itself, which has argued that Snowden is a traitor, subject to arrest under the Espionage Act.
In fact, the only account that Snowden is currently following is the NSA. (Which is not officially following him back—yet).
