Nestlé, the world's largest transnational food and beverage company, owns more than 2,000 brands. And as trick-or-treaters gear up for Halloween this year, they can expect to find a lot of Nestlé candy in their bags. In 2005, the International Labor Rights Fund sued Nestlé for buying cocoa from Ivorian plantations that allegedly used child slave labor, but the U.S. courts dismissed the case five years later, arguing that corporations cannot be held liable for violations of international law. Controversially, the company also came under fire for bottling millions of gallons of water throughout drought-ridden California. Nestle owns 67 bottled water brands around the world—11 in North America alone.
