The historic move comes days after two shooters opened fire at a social services facility in San Bernardino, California, killing 14 people and injuring 21 others. The mass shooting has renewed national debates over gun control, and the Times is apparently taking a definitive stand in support of reform.
"The editorial, headlined 'The Gun Epidemic,' describes it as 'a moral outrage and a national disgrace that people can legally purchase weapons designed specifically to kill people with brutal speed and efficiency,'" the Times wrote. "It suggests drastically reducing the number of firearms, and 'eliminating some large categories of weapons and ammunition.'"
"It is not necessary to debate the peculiar wording of the Second Amendment," the editorial reads. "No right is unlimited and immune from reasonable regulation."
Arthur Sulzberger Jr., the Times' publisher, said in a statement that the paper decided to place the editorial on the front page in an effort to "deliver a strong and visible statement of frustration and anguish about our country’s inability to come to terms with the scourge of guns."
The New York Daily News has recently published a number of controversial front page covers concerning gun control, with the latest arguing that mass shooters of all races and religions should be regarded as terrorists—not just those of Muslim backgrounds. The paper has made a habit of highlighting the public's growing frustration over legislative inaction in the aftermath of mass shootings.
