Los Angeles hairstylist Chaz Dean is making headlines due to a class action lawsuit against Wen Hair Care and infomercial company Guthy-Renker over Dean's hair product WEN.

The lawsuit includes more than 200 women across 40 states who claim Dean's hair product WEN can cause severe hair damage and even lead to significant hair loss, breakage, and bald spots, among other things. The lawsuit claims that WEN's ads are misleading and that Guthy-Renker, which markets the product, “reinforces its false statements," in turn influencing more women to buy WEN products.

Court documents reveal that Florida plaintiff, Amy Freidman purchased the WEN Cleansing Conditioner Sweet Almond Mint basic kit in late January 2014 after seeing ads for the products. Within two weeks, she "began losing substantial and abnormal amounts of hair,” the class action lawsuit alleges. Freidman claims that the hair loss continued for a few weeks, even after she stopped using the product. She says she lost up to a third of the hair on her head and that she started using hair extensions to cover up the hair loss. The complaint claims that “the WEN products at issue contain a caustic ingredient that causes a chemical reaction and damages hair and follicles" in addition to “numerous harsh chemicals and known human allergens.”

The lawsuit also claims that Freidman is far from alone in having negative experiences as a result of WEN.

“[T]he internet is replete with examples of blogs and other websites where consumers have complained of the exact same issues with WEN Cleansing Conditioner,” the suit states.

WEN does, in fact, have many negative reviews online from people who claim it causes hair loss. As noted by the Daily Beast, WEN also has lots of positive reviews that have led to its top ranking on Amazon. Guthy-Renker's website for WEN describes it as "an industry-changing product line that excludes ordinary shampoo" and states that Dean has eschewed shampoo for nearly 15 years as it can be harmful to hair. WEN also prides itself on being sulfate-free.

But since the lawsuit started gaining more attention online, more people have come forward to complain about WEN on social media, with some saying they don't even want to leave the house because of the damage the product has done to their hair. Earlier this month, California resident Tracie Hashton revealed that this happened to her after using WEN.

Hashton wrote in a public complaint on WEN's Facebook page:

"I can't leave my house I'm depressed wen hair products is responsible for my hair loss I have been shampooing and conditioning my hair with their non-shampooing conditioner which blocked my pores and caused my hair to be basically washed with lotion here's pictures I need help I don't know who to turn to what lawyers are helping I'm overwhelmed and frustrated I cry when I look in the mirror I wear a baseball cap when I go outside this is a warning to everybody in the world don't use wen hair solution ...WHEN, WEN I HAD HAIR."

WEN responded to Hashton's comment by advising her to contact their Corporate Escalation Team, and more comments starting piling up from people alleging hair loss as well:

WEN spokesperson Joe Hixson told BuzzFeed News in a statement that the complaints don't represent a significant amount of the product's customer base and that there could be many reasons for customers' hair loss that are not related to the products:

"Importantly, there is no scientific evidence whatsoever to support any claim that our hair care products caused anyone to lose their hair. There are many reasons why individuals may lose their hair, all unrelated to Wen hair care products. We intend to vigorously contest the allegations made against our products."
