What Happened When This Baby Needed to Be Breastfed Before Her Mom's Wedding

January 20th 2016

Photographer Danni Evans' photo of a bride breastfeeding on her wedding day is going viral on Facebook.

While Australian woman Tayla Gillespie was getting her makeup done right before her nuptials, her 13-month-old child Rohzi needed to eat. Though Gillespie was just 15 minutes away from walking down the aisle, she prioritized feeding her daughter and had the moment perfectly captured in a photograph.

"My daughter hadn't slept all day as she was with family and friends while we all got ready, so in the final hours before the ceremony she came in and all she wanted was mummy," Gillespie wrote, according to Breastfeeding Mama Talk's Facebook page. "What she does is latches for a few seconds and then runs off for a play, 5 minutes later she will come back and latch for another few seconds and this is a never ending cycle unless she's actually hungry and has a good feed, she does this because she loves and needs my comfort."

Gillespie wrote that her daughter needed her mom in that moment because all of the activity around her was overwhelming:

"She was tired and wanted her mummy, she had no idea what was happening and straight after this photo she unlatched and off she ran playing with makeup brushes. I couldn't imagine feeding my daughter any other way. She has figured out how to pull my top down and get what she wants herself and my family laugh and say 'self serve boobie.' Breastfeeding is by far the greatest thing I have ever done and the bond I have with my daughter is like no other. You can see the love in her eyes for me and I still am so grateful for my photographer capturing this extremely special moment between mother and daughter."

The image has garnered nearly 15,000 likes on Breastfeeding Mama Talk's Facebook page as well as many positive comments:

"I'm more than grateful for you capturing this moment because you know how much I cherish my breastfeeding bond with Rohzi," she wrote. "I'm glad we can share this with so many people as well, once again thank you Danni for always going above and beyond."

This comes at a time when many mothers have complained on social media about being shamed for breastfeeding their children. Actress Alyssa Milano, who has been working to normalize breastfeeding, recently got into a heated debate with TV host Wendy Williams about why it's wrong to shame mothers for breastfeeding in public.

"I don't need to see that," Williams said. "I just don't want to."

When Milano asked if Williams would like having to eat meals under a blanket rather than out in the open, Williams said she would simply go to the car to feed her baby if the child needed to be breastfed.

Milano added that she never expected to become a breastfeeding advocate in the public eye but that she loves holding this role.

"I was surprised that [after I posted my breastfeeding photo], I was then put in this position of being a breastfeeding advocate, which I love and I take that job with a lot of responsibility, but it was kind of shocking that we were that opinionated about something that's supposed to be so incredibly natural," she said.
