J.K. Rowling's Moving Tweet to a Fan Struggling With Depression

February 8th 2016

Author of the Harry Potter series J.K. Rowling is known for tweeting fans encouraging and uplifting words. But on Monday the author went the extra mile by reaching out to one fan suffering from depression.

A Brazilian teenager named Marina tweeted at Rowling asking for advice on how to remove the "Dementors" from her life.

In one moving tweet, Rowling responded:

For Rowling, depression is something that hits close to her heart.

"Dementors" are evil demon-like creatures who come to terrorize and scare people in the Harry Potter series, and were inspired by Rowling's own experience battling depression as a young single mother. Rowling admitted that she had contemplated suicide during the time she was struggling to establish her career and that she spent "nine months in cognitive behavioral therapy" for her depression, according to the Associated Press.

After Rowling's tweet, other fans began to show support and offer suggestions to Marina, one of which Rowling re-tweeted.

For Marina, the amount of support was a blessing.
