Yesterday a clip of HLN anchor Nancy Grace debating rapper 2 Chainz about marijuana legalization went viral. She accused the rapper of being a bad influence on kids by supporting legalization, arguing that increased access to pot will have harmful effects on society.

2 Chainz countered by noting that access to marijuana is already widely available and that keeping it away from kids comes down to education and responsible parenting. He also noted the significantly more negative effects of alcohol on public health as well as the economic and criminal justice detriments of our flawed drug policies.

Grace, who is also a former prosecutor, disagreed.

But it turns out Grace has a long history of ignoring the evidence on behalf of legalized marijuana. Despite it being proven repeatedly that marijuana is safer and less violent than alcohol and other currently legal substances, Grace has continuously propagated fear and misinformation about the dangers of pot.

"The reason I am against the legalization of pot is because I've seen people on pot that shoot each other, that stab each other, that strangle each other, drive under the influence, kill families," she once stated. 

However, according to University of Texas criminologist Robert Morris, "evidence points toward reductions in violent behavior for those who smoke marijuana."

A study by the University Of Buffalo also analyzed data from 634 couples over the span of nine years of marriage – from 1996 to 2005 – and discovered that couples that used marijuana regularly reported the least frequent IPV (intimate partner violence) perpetration. In particular, the study found that couples who smoked marijuana two to three times a month or more reported less frequent IPV perpetration by husbands. This finding proves especially significant considering one in four women experience domestic violence in their lifetime, according to the National Institute of Justice and the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.
