March 27th 2016

The marijuana legalization movement has made impressive gains in the last decade. Not only have 23 states and the District of Columbia passed legalization measures for medical and recreational cannabis, but public opinion on the issue is also shifting dramatically, challenging stoner stereotypes and debunking myths about marijuana users along the way.

Reddit has done much to contest anti-marijuana campaigns depicting marijuana users as lazy, apathetic, couch-locked loners. Common posts on the subreddit r/trees feature "smoke spots," where users from around the world showcase snapshots from the scenic places where they've lit up (or vaped). These posts defy stoner stereotypes as reflections of the community's commitment to, and appreciation of, nature, adventure, and physical activity.
